A TWO-DAY WORKSHOP ON THE PAINTING OF FLORAL\/STILL LIFE USING THE VIVID COLOR AND FLEXIBILITY OF THE PASTEL. <\/span> An introductory demonstration will explore the use of underpaintings and how they contribute to more expressive paintings<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Emphasis will be on simplifying forms, depth of space, line quality, composition and color value.\u00a0 During the workshop students will explore using color and design in a new and different way.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Explore the secrets of the still life by seeing not only the forms, values, and edges but also the movement and atmosphere surrounding the still life pieces.<\/span> This workshop provides an understanding of the concepts and techniques of pastel painting. \u00a0Artists of all levels of painting abilities are welcome.<\/span> Day One:\u00a0 Beginning the Painting<\/strong> A demonstration will illustrate and discuss firstly, design choices in the selection and placement of the still life objects. Afterward, color choices will be explored in preparation of the painting by the use of underpainting techniques. <\/span> Students will have the opportunity to apply these principles by completing a study of a still life using reference material that will be supplied to them before working from life.<\/span> Day Two:\u00a0 A morning demo will illustrate the implementation of pastel painting principles to capture the beauty of the still life. Using effective pastel strokes and blending or not blending to create and maintain fresh paint quality will also be discussed. A former university instructor and administrator and founder of both the Art Circle and the Muttontown School of Fine Arts at the Chelsea Center, Ms McGraw\u2019s current artistic attentions are solely directed to painting and teaching. Ms McGraw\u2019s recent commissions include portraits of children in Virginia, Maryland and New York. Recent exhibitions of both pastel and oil paintings have been viewed at the Salmagundi Club and National Arts Club in New York City as well as Long Island venues including the Barnes Gallery, the Huntington Art Center and the Long Island University at C.W. Post in Long Island.\u00a0 <\/span>Recent acquisitions include Bank of America and the United States Department of Commerce. She is a life member of the Art Students League of New York and a juried member of many organizations including the Oil Painters of America, The American Society of Marine Painters, the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, the Hudson Valley Art Association and the Audubon Artists. <\/a> Lemon and Teacup 12 x 12 oil on canvas board[\/caption]\n\nThis class is about painting alla prima (wet into wet) and the techniques used to create a fresh, direct response to our subjects.\n\nDays one and two, will focus on the still life. <\/strong>\nDays three and four, will focus on the figure.<\/strong>\n\nOn the first morning David will demo, then the class will paint. Students will learn to look at large, overall basic shapes and to simplify. Working on a toned ground, we\u2019ll start by sketching and placing the subject on the canvas. Then we'll block in two simple values: light and dark and then begin adding mid-tones. On day two students will continue to paint on their own with one-on-one instruction with David.\nOn day three there will be a morning demo on the figure. Students will then paint on their own with plenty of one-on-one instruction time with David.\n\nBy learning to simplify form, values and color, we begin to interpret and break down our subjects into more understandable tones and shapes instead of becoming distracted by details. This helps us to paint our subjects with greater clarity and directness. This class will be particularly helpful to students who wish to paint more loosely and to paint their subject with greater economy.\n\n
\n\n<\/a>About David Shevlino: <\/strong>David Shevlino studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (certificate \u201984) and the University of Pennsylvania (BFA \u201992). His work has been featured in national publications and he has exhibited his work and taught workshops throughout the U.S. He has also produced a series of videos and DVDs about his artwork and painting methods.\n\nHis exposure to art began as a teenager growing up in NJ near NYC. He began making trips to art museums in NYC when he was 15 and developed a love of traditional figurative painting. As a youth he found himself especially drawn to the old masters. Those early trips to the museum instilled in him a love of craft and a sense of where painting comes from.
