This class will start with the very basics of oil painting –  drawing techniques, designing your composition, preparing your canvas or surface, and mixing colors. Joan will familiarize students with what supplies to use, different surfaces (pros and cons), the color wheel and color mixing.
Each week, Joan will demo on a subject and students will work on a painting related to the demo. Joan is a fun and relaxed teacher who gives lots of individual help in an environment of creativity and support.

PAINTS:
Cadmium yellow lemon
Yellow ochre
Alizarin crimson
Cadmium red
Ultramarine blue
Burnt Sienna
Titanium white (large tube)

BRUSHES: Princeton catalyst: 2, 4, 6 Bright; 4,6 Filbert
Turpenoid and a glass jar with a coil on the bottom for brush cleaning
Painting Panels by Dick Blick Artist Supplies (Located in Carle Place): 8×10 or 9×12
OTHER: Grey paper palette pad (Blick brand has a color wheel on the inside cover) or glass palette 
Rags or paper towels

Joan Stevens Bio: Born in Brooklyn, Joan moved to Long Island in her teens. She always had a love of drawing and painting, She works in oils but also sketches in charcoal and pencil. Joan graduated from St. John’s University with a degree in Fine Art and from there went to FIT to earn a degree in illustration. She has studied with Robert Baxter, Charles Pasqualina, Howard Rose, Kim English and Peggi Kroll Roberts. Always returning to her love of figure drawing she can still be found taking life drawing classes in her home town of Long Beach.
She has had many jobs in the world of art including illustration, art director, photo stylist, muralist, window dresser, and face painter. Her company, Through the Looking Glass, designs and installs store windows and decorates for events at restaurants and parties.
Joan has exhibited her work in group and solo shows throughout Long Island. Venues include The National Art League of Douglaston, Art League of Long Island, Elderfield Preserve, Adelphi University, Le Bon Amis Gallery,  Martha Clara Vineyard, and iFly Trapeze. She has been commissioned for portraits and landscapes and has donated many pieces to raise money for various charities. She teaches oil painting and drawing at Garden City High school. Joan paints pleine aire whenever possible and is constantly inspired by the beauty of Long Island.

Six Mondays: July 10, 17, 24, 31 August 7, 14 • 4-5:15 pm

Materials included

Young artists will explore different materials including drawing, painting, collage, cut shapes, printmaking, constructions and more. Emphasis is on the tactile and using our imaginations. Each week we will create a special project. Students should wear a smock or old clothes.

A class for students who are interested in creating art and approaching the creative process in a whole new way.  This class is project based with an emphasis on thinking about the “why,” “how,” and the process of the project. Projects may take multiple weeks and may include sketching, sculpture, clay, painting. printing and more, often tumbling back and forth between media as the need arises. Students should wear a smock or old clothes.

• Registration and placement in The Art Guild classes is on a first-come, first serve basis.

• Registration cancellations made two (2) or more weeks prior to the start of class will receive a full refund.

• Registration cancellations made after the 1st class of a semester will incur a 25% fee for the class and a $25 cancellation fee.
• Absolutely no refunds after the second class of a semester.

• The Art Guild will be closed during inclement weather based on the decision of The Art Guild. When possible, cancelled classes will be made up during the course of the semester.

This class will focus on painting the still life in oil, in a contemporary, realist manner – how to begin a painting, blocking in the subjects, the role of light and shadow, how the background affects the painting and how to add the drama that will take your painting from good to great. A still life will be set up for students to paint.

Frances Ianarella is an award winning artist who has studied with David Leffel, and with Gregg Kreutz at the Art Students League and in his private studio. She has exhibited work in many venues in New York and Long Island. For more info on Frances and to see more of her work, visit her blog.

Advanced Art Studio For High School Students
Grades 9 – 12

This course is designed to assist the advanced drawing/painting/2-D design student in their freshman through senior years. Instructor will mentor and critique pre-assigned school projects or assign projects. There will be open studio time for students to work with the aid of the instructor to learn or enhance a specific skill or technique.

Classes will cover usage of various mediums including color theory, composition and life drawing. Guest speakers will stop by to demonstrate various techniques and skills.

Students should bring a pad of 18” x 24” drawing paper (not newsprint), 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B pencils, a kneaded eraser, and 3-5 samples of their work to the first class.
