Two options to choose from to learn about and enjoy Art History Over Lunch or After Hours. This is an engaging lecture series featuring great artists, masterpieces, and movements that have shaped our visual world.
Each session in the series explores a different topic. No previous art history experience is needed. just bring your curiosity!
Great Artists in their Teenage Years: Dürer to Picasso
What were the great artists making at thirteen, fifteen or eighteen? Discover the teenage works of Dürer, Michelangelo, Artemisia Gentileschi, Bernini, Rosa Bonheur and Picasso with Kim-Ly Moynihan, Ph.D. Through early drawings, paintings and sculptures, we’ll explore how training, opportunity and precocious talent shaped the artistic development and later masterpieces of these artists. Highlighted works in nearby collections include Bernini’s Faun Teased by Children and Bonheur’s The Horse Fair in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Picasso’s later works at the Museum of Modern Art.
This lecture complements the upcoming Nassau County High School exhibition at The Art Guild.

Autumnal Mixed Media Watercolor

Keeping the vibrant Autumn seasonal spirit in mind, experimenting with more dry and wet media in our watercolors can add exciting contrasts with wax crayons, oil pastels, watercolor crayons, acrylic ink or regular inks. They offer fun elements of “resist” textures of beading, ragged sensitive linear edges, inky lines and bright colorations, etc,…including happy accidents.
Subjects will vary in the class according to your preference but Autumnal topics plus being adventurous with mixed media will inspire your spontaneity in making fluid discoveries which can expand your personal artistic style.

Glass Etching
with Elizabeth Ramjit
Learn the art of glass etching in this hands-on 2-hour workshop! Create a personalized glass piece using pre-cut designs, positive sayings, fun shapes/designs, and custom initial monograms.
Choose from a variety of designs and combine elements to create something personal or make a unique handmade gift.
You’ll learn how to prepare your glass, position your design, apply etching cream, and safely reveal your finished etched design.
No previous experience necessary.
Students should bring: Up to 3 small to medium glass items of your choice that are suitable for glass etching.
Examples include a glass vase, drinking glasses/tumblers/mug, jar, candle holders, mirror, or other smooth glass surface. Feel free to reach out with any questions.

Master Portrait Oil Painting Study with
Helene Balzarini
This one day Workshop would employ the “direct painting” method, whereby students would copy a Master and finish the painting in one three-hour session.
Master painting reference photos will be supplied. Students can choose which of the Masters they’d like to work from and can bring any size canvas they’d like.
This workshop is an exploration into the choices the Master artist made regarding composition, subject, color, value, painting style, etc. It’s a fun exercise and can be a valuable learning experience.
Students should have prior experience working with oils.

Baroque Oil Painting Techniques

2 Day Workshop: Saturdays Dec 5 & Dec 12, 10am-2pm
This workshop will prepare students to be able to take baroque style techniques and make them their own. Students will learn how to prepare their canvases and paint from photo reference. We will go over the start of the underpainting all the way to the final layers of paint.
Students will be learning how to mix color, identify important values and color changes, and the importance of paint placement. Learn how to paint like a baroque artist, and make it your own!

Creative Mosaics
with Judith Caseley
Awaken your inner artist with a Creative Mosaic Design workshop!
Transform colorful pieces of glass and ceramic tile into stunning mosaics! In this beginner-friendly workshop, you’ll learn the fundamentals of mosaic art, from choosing materials and cutting techniques to adhering tiles and grouting your masterpiece. Be prepared to have fun! Ooen to all levels
No prior experience needed! Judith will guide you through every step, providing helpful tips and tricks along the way. You’ll have the freedom to create your own unique design on a wooden panel, with ONE of the designs listed:
-a letter (your first initial or a loved one’s)
-a flower
-a heart
-a simple animal
Judith will help you draw the design on the panel, learn to cut and lay tile. You will take your mosaic home with grout and instructions. Creating Mosaics is very forgiving…no matter what you’ve created, when it’s grouted, it will be great.

This workshop will cover the fundamentals of alla prima dog/animal portraits from drawing to completed painting in oils.
You will learn how to:
- choose and crop your reference photo to create the most interesting composition
- create a simple, accurate drawing on your canvas (a great painting starts with a great drawing!)
- how to layer paints to create form and texture
- how to push the values of lights and darks to create a painting with depth and interest
- how to create a portrait that is a convincing likeness that has personality and soul
