Basic Watercolors with Esther Marie

8 weeks: Jan. 14, 21, 28, Feb. 4, 11,  25 and March 10, 17 • 10:30am-12:30pm (No class February 18 and March 3)

This class will help promote confidence and control in watercolors.

To focus, we will start with a simple breathing exersize for a couple of minutes before we start to paint. 

This class will focus on developing good compositions through negative painting, focal points and a variety of tools. Students will learn about brush strokes, washes, blending and color theory.  They will use watercolors to establish color and light, to work wet-on-wet, for texture, to suggest value changes, for negative painting with discussion on composition, as well as for focus and depth. 

Demonstrations will be followed by hands-on experience, one-on-one asistance, and encouraging critiques. 

The emphasis in this class is on individual instructional techniques to foster the student’s ability.  Students will complete several small paintings in the class.

What is Acrylic Paint Pouring?

The process of paint pouring entails using acrylic paint, resin, several oil mediums and (a little) propane gas which creates the beautiful and unique cells. The surface is tilted in different directions to let the paint flow and the colors interact in unpredictable, yet always interesting ways.

Ellen will start by discussing different techniques of paint pour and showing some examples.  She’ll explain the science behind the paint pour method and show some creative techniques people are using.  

Students will then create a lovely paint pour which takes around 1 hour 15 minutes.

You will need to leave your paintings here to dry on a flat surface for about 4 days (or they’ll continue to “pour”).

Please bring plastic non-latex gloves. We’ll have all the other materials for you! 

Ellen Kanner is a fluid acrylic artist creating specialized paint pours. Her paintings are shown in galleries in NY and Long Island. Ellen has previously worked in ceramic and stone.

This class is for you if:

•  You are a beginner photographer 

• You have a DSLR but you shoot in auto mode and want to take control of the aperture and shutter settings.

• You often get photos that are over or under exposed…and you don’t know how to fix it.

• You have some type of software on your computer to view your photos.  (Can be just the consumer software that comes with your computer or camera.)

Requirements: Any DSLR camera with manual, (print it from the website or a link to the manual on your phone.)
(Ex: Canon Rebel/EOS, Nikon D5600/D3400/D3300 and many others.)
DSLRs have interchangeable lenses. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
(Please, no Canon Powershots, Nikon Coolpix or similar.)

You do not need Photoshop. You can use any software that will allow you to upload your photos to your computer.

As a photographer, Linda Nutter works at the intersection of art and technology.  Her class at the Art Guild gives her the opportunity to combine her extensive background in the arts with her love of cameras and their technical intricacies…intricacies that, when mastered, allow a photographer to become fully expressive.

 

Although she specializes in artistic and business portraiture of people, she also enjoys photographing landscapes, sports, still lifes.

She holds a BA in Theater, an MA in Choreography and Dance Education, and a Ph.D. in aesthetics. In addition, she is a Certified Movement Analyst (CMA) and spent the first part of her career as a choreographer. She has taught at the University of Nebraska, New York University, Marymount Manhattan College, and the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies. She studied photography at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and looks forward to helping students refine their photographic vision by employing a thoughtful and measured approach to experimenting with the manual and semi-manual modes of their cameras.

Discover the difference between drawing and painting with colored pencils in this three-day colored pencil workshop.  Cynthia Knox will guide you step by step through the process of creating this stunning still life (photo reference shown) and will demonstrate her signature style of painting with this dry medium.  A variety of tips and techniques will be taught that will enable each artist to render the lace, fruit, flower, wood and metallic textures seen in this composition.  In addition to group and individual instruction, Cynthia will provide high-quality instructional materials that include a glossy tutorial booklet, reference photo, her popular “Cheat Sheet” and the actual surface with a light tracing of the entire still life to minimize actual drawing time and focus on color rendering.  Join Cynthia in creating a unique masterpiece that friends and family will be certain to ask, “THAT’s colored pencil?!”

Although painting a person in watercolor may seem daunting, it is every bit as approachable as creating a still life or landscape. Ted Nuttall demonstrates the techniques, and instills the confidence to enjoy painting people. Ted will discuss the benefits of photographic reference, as well as how to interpret a photo in order to give life and energy to the subject.

In Ted’s daily demonstrations and presentations, he shares his personal approach to painting – plus he introduces the work of other artists with the objective of inspiring enriched seeing and thinking skills. What’s more, significant time is allowed for one-on-one instruction. In an atmosphere that’s both creative and supportive, Ted encourages, in each participant, a renewed enthusiasm for his or her art – regardless of their skill level.

Ted Nuttall: A graduate of Colorado Institute of Art, Ted Nuttall is a figurative artist whose painting expression was born out of his observation of people. Ted is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Watercolor West, Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, and enjoys Master Status with the Transparent Watercolor Society of America
Ted’s paintings continue to win awards in juried exhibitions throughout the country. And his work has been featured in numerous national and international art publications. Most recently, he was a featured artist in both the 2014 Russian publication “Masters of Watercolor” and in the 2013 French publication “Pratique Des Arts”. Ted was the featured cover artist for the February 2014 issue of Watercolor Artist magazine. Ted’s work has been published in North Light Books’, Splash 8 and Splash 10, and his painting “Whispering Smith” appeared on the cover of Splash 12.
Artist’s Statement: For as long as I can remember, I have been a fascinated spectator of human behavior – the quintessential people watcher. I naturally seek the unique character in everyone I encounter. Often, as I observe someone in his or her everyday environment, I am rewarded with a moment when a gesture or expression combine with the play of light and shadow.
A contemplative smile, hands cradling a book or carefully tying a shoe, a shadow cast by a pair of wire-rimmed glasses – and there occurs a pivotal instant when a story appears.
My paintings are an attempt to compose and thoughtfully record the nuances that transfixed these moments, these stories, in my mind.

Matisse expresses the notion superbly: “I do not literally paint that table, but the emotion it produces upon me.”

Intrigued by the idea of painting abstractly? This four session class will give you a taste of painting in an abstract manner . We will be working with black and white water based enamel on watercolor paper. This experience has been called “freeing” and “a lot of fun “ by so many students. Experience what it feels like to paint this way . Lots of individualized instruction and discussion . The works you produce here can be the beginnings of new ideas and directions.

Artist’s Statement
An essential truth seems to come alive when I use my body to create my paintings- something visceral and muscular; a directness that feels so “right”. The authentic mark is what I am after; the true, non-gimmicky, not contrived mark; the mark that is made when “I am the painting I am painting”. Playing with the paint, working sometimes at the speed of light, other times slowly and deliberately; all coming together in a flurry of physical activity. The result is an authentic moment in time.

Ellen is Vice President of The Art Guild of Port Washington and on the Art Advisory Council of the Port Washington Library. Her work has been exhibited in galleries in Philadelphia and New York. Her friend and mentor is Stan Brodsky.
