THERE’S A TRICK FOR THAT The Keys to Rendering Realistic Facial Features: Eyes, Nose, Mouth and Ears

If you want to draw or paint expressive Portraits, it is not enough to try to copy what you see, trying to mimic every contour as you become frustrated with the model moving ever so slightly. If you know what to look for, you will render realistic form with confidence!

Working from a live model, this Workshop will provide you with the knowledge and experience that reveals the patterns to every key Feature on the head. Through demonstrations, handouts, exercises and personalized crItiques, you will be provided with the strategy and insight to identify and replicate the unique characteristics of the sitter’s Head and Individual Features.

The 4 session Workshop includes demos, handouts and personalized critique including:

  • The effect of light on the form and choosing an optimal lighting set-up to reveal the key features.
  • The overall structure of the head with keys to placement of each feature
  • Compositional guidelines to optimally position the head on the canvas.
  • Information regarding application of any medium to produce a convincing final rendering and likeness

OIL
For experienced painters, bring the colors you are comfortable with. Please use Turpanoid as a substitute for turpentine. Beginners may want to try water soluble oils (Lukas Berlin from Jerrys Artarama is an inexpensive option). Light to medium toned (similar to the color of sand paper or a midtone grey) stretched canvas or panel, 11×14, 12×16, or 14×18 preferred. A hand-held mirror is recommended, as well as a View Catcher or equivalent.

BRUSHES
A selection of brushes each from 2 (2 brushes), 4 (3 brushes), 6 (1), 8 (1) sizes—Princeton Aspen are a good choice. Please have mostly filberts and a few small rounds.

Paper Towels
Palette; or 12×16 Richeson gray palette pad
Palette knife

Intrigued by the idea of painting abstractly? This four session class will give you a taste of painting in an abstract manner. We will be working with black and white water based enamel on watercolor paper. This experience has been called “freeing” and “a lot of fun “ by so many students. Experience what it feels like to paint this way. Lots of individualized instruction and discussion. The works you produce here can be the beginnings of new ideas and directions.

Ellen will provide the paint.

    About Ellen Hallie Schiff

Artist’s Statement
An essential truth seems to come alive when I use my body to create my paintings- something visceral and muscular; a directness that feels so “right”. The authentic mark is what I am after; the true, non-gimmicky, not contrived mark; the mark that is made when “I am the painting I am painting”. Playing with the paint, working sometimes at the speed of light, other times slowly and deliberately; all coming together in a flurry of physical activity. The result is an authentic moment in time.

Ellen is on the Art Advisory Council of the Port Washington Library and is the former Vice President of The Art Guild of Port Washington. Her work has been exhibited in galleries in Philadelphia and New York. Her friend and mentor is Stan Brodsky. View Ellen’s work at @ehschiff.

Using Still life, landscape and figures as a point of departure, this class will explore the dynamics of using acrylics in both conventional and unconventional ways. The properties of acrylics range from watercolor-like to oil paint-like and can also be used graphically.

As one of the top plein air painters in the country, Kirk has spent a lifetime refining and adjusting his use of virtually all media to serve the artist in the most diverse and efficient way. Artists will work towards finishing in class painting exercises in single sessions, to build proficiency and control and supplement with a multiple session piece at home with in class feedback.and individual guidance.

One of the best qualities of acrylics is the ability to be manipulable and refine a piece in progress and learning how to let the paint do its part of the work (or play) can free up the artist’s creative flow. Adjusted for each person’s current skill, this fun, upbeat and unique class is based upon the KLM (Kirk Larsen Method) which accelerates the learning curve in art.

For early novice through professional artists.

This course is for experienced artists to advance their drawing skills, enhance their confidence and efficiency.

Through demonstration, in-class exercises, and at-home practice (optional), the artist will learn to trust their line and embellish their visual accuracy and ability to translate what they see to paper or canvas.

In-classroom drills will help you to capture imagery, eliminate wasted lines, and also help each artist to find and enhance their artistic vocabulary. For the novice artist that already draws, right up to semi-professional & professional artists, this class can bring your acumen to that next level.

Working in pencil, pen, and charcoal additional media can be utilized. Adjusted for each person’s current skill, this fun, upbeat and unique class is based upon the KLM (Kirk Larsen Method) which accelerates the learning curve in art.
