I graduated from St. John’s University with a bachelor’s degree in Communication Arts and earned an MFA in Graphic Design at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan.

I’m a graphic and mobile/tablet app designer and producer, and have worked with companies such as PubWorx, Meredith Inc., Time Inc, and Conde Nast.

I rediscovered my love of painting, after a 20 year gap, a friend started taking a class with Sheila Chezar-Hershkowitz and shortly after I was taking classes as well. I discovered I enjoy painting animals, and I often use my cat Jorge Posada as my test subject for experimenting with different materials.
I did a series of pieces of women in corsets, as a metaphor for the binds that often confine women.

I have been fortunate to have been included in a few shows at The Art Guild and have had pieces shown at the Barnes Gallery, located in Garden City, NY.

Due to a complication at birth, I have constant double vision. To compensate, one eye is stronger than the other and I have no depth perception. This flat vision allows me to see the world as if it were already on canvas–with visual cues of light, shadow, and scale to create form. My particular viewpoint causes everything to become a portrait, including inanimate objects. Everything has a life.

My name is Susan Barse Miller. I have shown art at the disabled level, all over the Island, including Hofstra University. They have one of my paintings. I have shown at libraries and churches at the professional level. More recently I have shown with the Art Guild of Port Washington. My background in Fine Arts comes from my family. My grandmother, Susan Barse Miller, was a painter. So was my Dad, Barse Miller. We all three studied at The Pennsylvania Acadmey of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Pa. More recently I have explored watercolors. It is a challenging and rewarding medium. I hope to continue in watercolors even though I have gone back to some acrylic painting.

As a self-taught emerging artist, my work in oils is reflective of architecture, flora, landscape and street scenes that I’ve photographed in my travels, especially during a trip to Ireland. Drawing inspiration and direction from my photographs, I trained myself to “see what I’m looking at.” By breaking down an image into shadows, light, movement, and color, I discovered the ability to breathe life into something of one dimension. I especially enjoy isolating an up-close perspective on flowers, whose patterns and complexities continue to amaze and delight – nature’s formula for the creation of something unique, imperfect and random.

With no formal training, other than an extensive undergraduate art history education at Hofstra University, I began painting in late 2017 upon receiving a gift of an easel and art supplies from my father, who paints as well. He knew I had it in me and now it was my turn to create.
