With thanks to Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton, Parks Commissioner Eileen Krieb and County Executive Laura Curran, Nassau County has committed funding dedicated to restoring The Art Guild’s historic barn.

    “JOY OF COLOR” a Juried Competition and Exhibition, from soothing pastels to vibrant monochromes and rainbows, color can be used to evoke emotions and moods. The variables of hue, saturation, luminosity, and lightness allow an artist to play and control the atmosphere in their work. Show us your individuality through color!

     

    CRITERIA All styles from abstract to realism are welcome. All works must be original and have been created in the last five years. References used in the creation of the submitted work must be the artist’s own, or copyright-released for use in this work. The curating committee’s decision is final.

     

    MEDIUMS Including but not limited to acrylic, oil, watercolor, photography, digital art, pastel, mixed media, collage, encaustic, etching/prints, or sculpture. (NO MASTER COPIES OR FAN ART)

     

    Please be aware that the digital images you send should look as good as possible. These will be the images that will be displayed in our online gallery. Try to photograph your image in natural light, be sure that the image is straight and that there is no glare on glass or varnished surface.

    ENTRY FEE(S)  Registration is required and non-refundable. 

     

    • Members: $20 (1-2 pieces) or $30 (an additional piece).
    • Non-members: $30 (1-2 pieces) or $40 (an additional piece)
    • Student members: $10 (1-2 pieces) or $20 (an additional piece)
    • No more than 3 works per artist

     

    FINALISTS The Selection Committee will review all entries and notify each artist as to the acceptance of the submitted work. The Art Guild has the right, in its sole discretion, to choose which eligible entries will be accepted to be exhibited. All decisions are final. Artists whose work has been selected will be notified after June 1st either by email or here on the website.

     

    AWARDS 1st Place $300 • 2nd Place $200 • 3rd Place $100.

     

    LIABILITY & INSURANCE The Liability Waiver on the entry form must be signed by the artist submitting images for consideration. It is the responsibility of the participating artist to insure or self-insure any work submitted for inclusion in this exhibit.

    SELLING YOUR ARTWORK

    Artwork may be sold directly by the artist with a suggested donation of 20% of the selling price from the artist to The Art Guild. Note, however, that sales may not be made at the exhibition. All work must remain on view for the duration of the exhibit.

    It’s all about Old – Old faces, old places and antiquities of every variety.  Show us the old-fashioned, the out of date, the broken, worn and dilapidated that still pleases our eyes.  Give us images that fill us with nostalgia, give us a smile, or amaze us as timeless art. We’re looking for creativity and originality – work that reflects your unique approach and style.

    JUROR OF AWARDS: Harold Naideau is a photographer, artist, author and educator based on Long Island. He teaches photography at Suffolk County Community College, Briarcliffe College and Stony Brook University. His photography blends traditional fine-art photography with digital imaging and printing and utilizes a changing array of modern  material and processes.  You may see his work at: www.naideauphotography.com

    SIZE AND FRAMING: For uniformity of the exhibit please follow the guidelines below

    • Minimum photo size is 8” x 10” excluding the mat.
    • The mat must be all white, and the frame must be a dark color.
    • Frame size must not exceed 36” on the longest side. 
    • Frame MUST be wired securely for hanging, with the wire attached via screw eyes or D-rings to the frame, NOT the backboard. Sawtooth hangers are not allowed. No tape or string on the back. No gallery wraps.
    • Matting and framing of your work must comply with the above OR IT WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED at drop off.
    • Work must be labeled with the title, photographer’s name, street address, phone number, and email address.  
    • Please note: Absolutely no watermarks on printed images.

    DELIVERY OF ARTWORK Selected artwork, (ready for display), is to be delivered on the dates indicated below. Please provide a typed bio or artist statement, printed on one side of an 8.5 x 11 sheet of white paper.

    Artist Couples: A Pre-Valentine’s Day Art Lecture with Debbie Wells

    “We’re all a little weird, and life’s a little weird. And when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love” (Seuss). This is so true when it comes to couples in the arts! This lecture covers several couples (of all forms) and their how their personal relationships and professional lives in the art world flourished together (or not) and why.

    Debbie Wells of Artful Circle will give a dynamic and fun presentation of the love lives and art of these very interesting creative couples!

    Some of the couples include:

    • French Impressionist Edgar Degas and his complicated relationship with American artist Mary Cassatt
    • The dynamics between American spouses art dealer/photographer Alfred Steiglitz and painter Georgia O’Keeffe
    • The marriage of legendary Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera
    • The Jackson Pollock/Lee Krasner marriage, including their time spent together on Long Island
    • Same-sex couples  – Brit artist team Gilbert & George and modern artists Jasper Johns & Robert Rauschenberg
    • The art partnership of Os Gemeos, the street artist brother duo
    • Pablo Picasso and everybody – his wives, mistresses, girlfriends, etc!

    About the Speaker

    Debbie Wells is the co-founder of Artful Circle with Franklin Hill Perrell which provides visits to art galleries and museums, art lectures and curatorial services. For more information, visit www.artfulcircle.com

    She is a graduate of Parsons School of Design (BFA/MA) with a professional background in graphic design, advertising and publicity for over 30 years. Over the years, she has won several awards from Graphic Design:USA magazine for her designs in package design, corporate design and publication.

    Wells is an Artist Member of the Salmagundi Club in NYC and has had her photographs in many juried exhibitions, including their historic Black & White Exhibition. She also serves as Immediate Past President of the Board at the Art League of Long Island in Dix Hills and in addition to her leadership role, personal projects there include: creating a hand-painted fundraising mural for their art library and as speaker for the “Dab of Paint” art history lecture series.

    Her curatorial work with Franklin Hill Perrell includes exhibitions at the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn Harbor, Heckscher Museum in Huntington, Art League of Long Island in Dix Hills, Preservation Long Island in Oyster Bay, Roslyn Landmark Society, and Bryant Library in Roslyn and Tria Gallery in Chelsea.
