About the Whitney

Designed by internationally renowned architect Renzo Piano, the museum is the jewel of the Meatpacking District, alongside new NYC attractions including the High Line and nearby Hudson Yards. Since Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney initiated this invitational exhibition in 1932, the Biennial is still the longest running survey of American art.

About the Whitney Biennial

The Whitney Biennial is a must-see for anyone who wants to see the art of the moment – paintings, sculptures, installations, photography and more by over 75 artists specially chosen by the Biennial curatorial team.

What makes the Biennial unique?

The Biennial was designed to express the voices of primarily young emerging artists with the majority under forty-years old. This year, female artists are represented in record breaking numbers. The curators traveled the country looking for diversity in artist backgrounds and artistic expression with a message – from body image and gender identity, politics and current events, ethnicity, physical disabilities, social and community issues. This is an edgy, not pretty exhibition – their mission is to provoke thought and appeal to the way people look at their world today.

Discover the difference between drawing and painting with colored pencils in this three-day colored pencil workshop.  Cynthia Knox will guide you step by step through the process of creating this stunning still life (photo reference shown) and will demonstrate her signature style of painting with this dry medium.  A variety of tips and techniques will be taught that will enable each artist to render the lace, fruit, flower, wood and metallic textures seen in this composition.  In addition to group and individual instruction, Cynthia will provide high-quality instructional materials that include a glossy tutorial booklet, reference photo, her popular “Cheat Sheet” and the actual surface with a light tracing of the entire still life to minimize actual drawing time and focus on color rendering.  Join Cynthia in creating a unique masterpiece that friends and family will be certain to ask, “THAT’s colored pencil?!”

Cynthia Knox, CPSA, is a colored pencil and graphite artist who lives in New York with her family.  Her artwork has received numerous awards in national and international juried exhibitions, and she has published 13 art instructional books, with a new book to be released in the Fall of 2018.  Publishers include Walter Foster Publishing (Quartos), Ann Kullberg Publishing, Strathmore Artists, and Viking Woodcrafts.  Cynthia teaches art workshops to individuals and large groups throughout the United States, internationally and online with Craftsy.com.  She is represented by LaBelle Enterprises for her workshops with Bob LaBelle as the primary contact: boblabelle@sbcglobal.net.
