Making Art out of Memories

If you’ve been quaran-cleaning then you may have come across boxes of cards, notes or clippings. A simple way to help clear out some paper but retain the memories is by framing them.

This is a simple project that you can do on your own, or enlist the help of family members so you can take a virtual stroll down memory lane.

 

– Purchase a frame at the store or online

– Group items together by memory or person or topic

– Experiment with placing the items on the frame 

– Glue or tape items to frame backing 

– Replace cover & hang

Regardless of your chosen media, good drawing skills are crucial to a successful outcome. Refine your drawing skills and hone your powers of observation. The class will sample and experiment with various materials which may include graphite, pen and ink, colored pencils, watercolor pencils, charcoal, markers, mixed media collage, and a group project at the discretion of the instructor.

This is a perfect class for a beginning artist or one who feels “rusty.” Please bring your enthusiasm, an open mind, an 18 x 24 drawing pad (NOT newsprint), 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B pencils, and a kneaded eraser to first class. Other simple materials will be required throughout the series.

Students will gain a strong understanding of the fundamentals of landscape painting while they advance to more challenging projects. During class we will discuss the genre of landscape and plein air painting. Students will learn about compositional methods and techniques used throughout the centuries such as the concept of perspective, areal perspective, the language of dominant verticals and horizontal lines, how to harmonize color, underpainting methods such as open and closed grisailles. Color theory will be discussed. Students will learn how to organize and structure their landscapes. The goal is for students to have a broader understanding of landscape painting methods as well as increase their skill and accuracy at creating beautiful landscape painting.

Leeanna Chipana began her art studies at the Stevenson Academy of Fine Arts in Oyster Bay, NY in 2004 where she studied under painter and illustrator Attila Hejja. While working as his personal assistant Leeanna studied figure painting with Mr. Hejja. After Mr. Hejja’s sudden death in the Summer of 2007, Leeanna decided to devote her life to pursuing her own art studies more rigorously and dedicate herself to teaching traditional painting and drawing. She started by attending the New York Art Students League where she studied figure painting for two years with artist Nelson Shanks. She went on to continue her studies under full scholarship with Robert Armetta of the Long Island Academy of Fine Art at the Atelier Armetta program located in Glen Cove, NY. She attended the Water Street Atelier where she was enrolled in a full-time program dedicated to classical drawing and painting under artist Jacob Collins. Her work ranges from landscapes to still-life and portraits from life.

Leeanna continued her training at the Grand Central Atelier in New York in their full-time core program – the Water Street Atelier with Jacob Collins. She was a recipient of the John F. and Anna Lee Stacey Grant, a Hudson River Fellow and was awarded a scholarship to attend the New York Academy of Art. She teaches on Long Island’s North Shore.
