Empowering the Teen Artist
for Middle & High School Students
12 Tuesdays: Sept. 10, 17, 24, Oct. 8, 15, 22, 29, Nov. 12, 19, 26, Dec. 3, 10 • 6-8 pm

Investigate the principles and elements of design, make cultural connections and integrate influences-across-borders while advancing your artistic expertise.
Subject matter will include realistic and abstracted: still life, landscape and portraiture. Students will gain exposure in a variety of media in order to produce a varied portfolio that demonstrates technical skill as well as creativity and conceptual skills.
Using centuries-old techniques, students will learn how to create their own painting and drawing mediums from natural materials.
- Egg tempera: used by Renaissance artists and modern masters
- Sumi ink: a signature technique of Asian art and culture
- Charcoal: possibly mankind’s earliest art material
- Watercolor: natural pigments from our gardens and yards replicate materials used for thousands of years
Instructor: Antonia Fthenakis
Antonia Fthenakis is a Parsons School of Design graduate, a Bank Street educator and a teacher of children and young adults with special needs, teaching studio arts and the art of traditional skills in NYC public school for some17 years. Currently based in Port Washington, co-creating and offering teachings inspired by the natural world, Waldorf philosophy, integrative holistic wellness and the Reiki healing arts.

Artists’ Reception and Award Ceremony

CALL FOR ENTRIES: The Art Guild invites all Nassau County High School Students to submit digital images of their 2D or 3D artworks for consideration to its “Nassau County High School Student Juried Art Competition & Exhibition” which will be on view at The Art Guild’s home, Elderfields Historic Preserve.
CRITERIA: All styles from abstract to realism are welcome. Student’s 2D or 3D work must be original and done “by hand” (no mechanical reproductions or giclees) and created within the last two years. The selection committee’s decision is final. Works to be included in this exhibition must be available from October 31 – November 27, 2016. No exceptions.
MEDIUMS: Including but not limited to acrylic, oil, watercolor, pastel, mixed media, digital art, collage, encaustic, etching/prints or sculpture with pedestal. (NO COPIES, PHOTOGRAPHY, REPRODUCTIONS OR GICLEES.)
SIZE: Maximum size 30 x 30 inches including frame.

ENTRY FEE: $25.00 for up to TWO entries per student.
Each student must fill out a separate form. No combining of fees or entries.

All entries MUST be submitted as digital files in JPG format, between 1 and 3 MB each, with 2,000 to 4,000 pixels on longest side. Label digital images as follows: artist’s lastname_firstname_entrynumber_title.jpg. (example: smith_john_1_beachsunset.jpg).
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: October 14
ACCEPTANCE NOTIFICATION: The Art Guild Selection Committee will review all entries and notify each artist as to the acceptance of submitted work by October 13, 2016. The Art Guild has the right, in its sole discretion, to choose which eligible entries will be accepted to be exhibited. All decisions are final.
FRAMING: Artwork must be framed unless gallery wrapped. Mat boards must be clean. All work must be securely wired for hanging with the wire attached via screw eyes or D-rings to the frame. ABSOLUTELY NO sawtooth hangers, duct tape, or glued on wires. Label back of work with artist’s name and title of piece. Please contact The Art Guild with ANY questions or concerns.

Advanced Art Studio For High School Students
Grades 9 – 12
8 weeks • Dates TBA • 6 – 8 pm
$200m/230nm
This course is designed to assist the advanced drawing/painting/2-D design student in their freshman through senior years. Instructor will mentor and critique pre-assigned school projects or assign projects. There will be open studio time for students to work with the aid of the instructor to learn or enhance a specific skill or technique.
Classes will cover usage of various mediums including color theory, composition and life drawing. Guest speakers will stop by to demonstrate various techniques and skills.
Students should bring a pad of 18” x 24” drawing paper (not newsprint), 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B pencils, a kneaded eraser, and 3-5 samples of their work to the first class.

Fourth Annual Nassau County
High School Senior
Scholarship
The Art Guild is pleased to sponsor scholarships for graduating seniors who attend high school in Nassau County. Scholarships will be awarded to students who will pursue the visual arts following their high school graduation, and who have demonstrated their commitment to any of the visual arts. This includes, but is not limited to: drawing, painting, sculpture, fashion design, set design and photography. Students who apply MUST be graduating seniors and attend high school in Nassau County. All sections of this application must be completed and postmarked by April 15. Images emailed separately must be received by April 15. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Award recipients will be selected by The Art Guild. All decisions are final.
