In this course, students will first work with the model in order to practice gesture drawing. We will have short poses starting with one minute to 5 minutes, ten minute and then 20 minute poses. Then students will work on a longer 4-session pose.
Students will be given step by step instructions on how to draw the figure first starting with the block in and incorporating the gesture, poetry, anatomy and structural understanding of the nude. Leeanna will discuss anatomy each session and handouts will be given out.
Students will first draw the figure before going on to painting.

Includes model fee.
Materials list will be provided.


Leeanna Chipana began her art studies at the Stevenson Academy of Fine Arts in Oyster Bay, NY in 2004 where she studied under painter and illustrator Attila Hejja. While working as his personal assistant Leeanna studied figure painting with Mr. Hejja. After Mr. Hejja’s sudden death in the Summer of 2007, Leeanna decided to devote her life to pursuing her own art studies more rigorously and dedicate herself to teaching traditional painting and drawing. She started by attending the New York Art Students League where she studied figure painting for two years with artist Nelson Shanks. She went on to continue her studies under full scholarship with Robert Armetta of the Long Island Academy of Fine Art at the Atelier Armetta program located in Glen Cove, NY. She attended the Water Street Atelier where she was enrolled in a full-time program dedicated to classical drawing and painting under artist Jacob Collins. Her work ranges from landscapes to still-life and portraits from life.

Leeanna continued her training at the Grand Central Atelier in New York in their full-time core program – the Water Street Atelier with Jacob Collins. She was a recipient of the John F. and Anna Lee Stacey Grant, a Hudson River Fellow and was awarded a scholarship to attend the New York Academy of Art. She teaches on Long Island’s North Shore.

Please join us for a special evening portrait demo with Leeanna Chipana. Leeanna will demonstrate her classical painting technique (with a live model) and discuss her methods for portrait painting. Questions and discussion will be taken throughout the demo. The painting will be raffled off with all proceeds benefitting The Art Guild. (There will be one 1/2 hour break. Refreshments will be served.)

Leeanna teaches a Portrait Drawing and Painting in Oil class here at The Art Guild (beginning May 22) as well as at the Atelier Flowerfields in St. James. Her emphasis is on techniques used by artists throughout the 18th and 19th century. Recenty her portrait “Kevin” was ranked number 10 in the 50 Beautiful Paintings Of Beautiful Men On Instagram on BuzzFeed.

This evening is FREE to the pubic. We will raffle off the “finished” portrait.

After her graduation last Spring, her work was shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Wausau, Wisconsin and the Zhou B. Arts center in Chicago. She uses her traditional background to focus on the theme of indigenous portraits in landscapes as a way to explore her own mixed Indigenous-Peruvian heritage.

Two-Day Workshop – January 13-14, 10-5pm

In this step by step workshop, Leeanna will teach students a simple way to create their own artist website, without needing any knowledge whatsover of writing code, with ultra user-friendly Squarespace (squarespace.com) or Wix (Wix.com). Each student will build their own personal portfolio website from start to finish.
Leeanna will guide students every step of the way, teaching about the various features of these options and choose a format to fit their needs.
The goal is for students leave with a professional website that they know how to use confidently – update, add images, and information – no web designer needed!
 
Students will need to come to the workshop with their own laptop, have purchased their own domain name, and come prepared with at least five jpg images of their art. Please bring a notebook to take notes.
Domain names can be purchased at any Domain/Hosting site (ex: GoDaddy.com). Please purchase your domain name at least two days before the workshop. It’s recommended that you purchase a domain name with your name (easiest for people to remember). Examples: JaneSmith.com, JaneSmithStudio.com, JaneSmithFineArt.com, or JaneSmithArt.com.
 

 
Leeanna Chipana is an artist working on Long Island’s North shore and a now a resident studio artist at The Art Guild. Leeanna was a professional front end web developer before leaving her company to pursue painting full-time and teaching art. Today she continues web design and development part-time while teaching and painting.  She has created websites using HTML, CSS, javascript, php and content management systems.

Students will gain a strong understanding of the fundamentals of landscape painting while they advance to more challenging projects. During class we will discuss the genre of landscape and plein air painting. Students will learn about compositional methods and techniques used throughout the centuries such as the concept of perspective, areal perspective, the language of dominant verticals and horizontal lines, how to harmonize color, underpainting methods such as open and closed grisailles. Color theory will be discussed. Students will learn how to organize and structure their landscapes. The goal is for students to have a broader understanding of landscape painting methods as well as increase their skill and accuracy at creating beautiful landscape painting.

This course is for beginners through advanced students. Working from the long pose students will be introduced to concepts of structural anatomy of the face and head. Students will review comparative measuring, sight size methods, light and form, and various shading techniques used by artists throughout the 18th and 19th century. The goal of this course is for each student to walk a way with a strong understanding of drawing and painting the portrait not only skillfully and accurately but also with a broader understanding of historical concepts of portraiture. Demonstrations will be provided throughout the course and lectures on portrait drawing and painting methods used throughout the centuries by master artists.
