Empowering the Teen Artist
for Middle & High School Students

12 Tuesdays: Sept. 10, 17, 24, Oct. 8, 15, 22, 29, Nov. 12, 19, 26, Dec. 3, 10 • 6-8 pm

Investigate the principles and elements of design, make cultural connections and integrate influences-across-borders while advancing your artistic expertise.

Subject matter will include realistic and abstracted: still life, landscape and portraiture. Students will gain exposure in a variety of media in order to produce a varied portfolio that demonstrates technical skill as well as creativity and conceptual skills.

Using centuries-old techniques, students will learn how to create their own painting and drawing mediums from natural materials.

  • Egg tempera: used by Renaissance artists and modern masters
  • Sumi ink: a signature technique of Asian art and culture
  • Charcoal: possibly mankind’s earliest art material
  • Watercolor: natural pigments from our gardens and yards replicate materials used for thousands of years 

Instructor: Antonia Fthenakis
Antonia Fthenakis is a Parsons School of Design graduate, a Bank Street educator and a teacher of children and young adults with special needs, teaching studio arts and the art of traditional skills in NYC public school for some17 years. Currently based in Port Washington, co-creating and offering teachings inspired by the natural world, Waldorf philosophy, integrative holistic wellness and the Reiki healing arts.

Seventh & Eighth Grade Advanced Art Studio

Thursdays – April 20, May 4, 11, 18, 25, and June 8
6 – 7:30 pm

(No Class April 27 and June 1)

Students in this class will hone their observational skills, learn to work with a variety of media (markers, watercolor, acrylics, colored pencils, etc.), and challenge their imaginations, and explore what they are interested in. Projects may take more than one week. Lots of one-on-one attention. Join us!

Art Studio for Teens – Fall 2017

 Fee: $165M/$195NM

 A fun class to nuture a love of art, with an emphasis on building artistic skills. Projects may include still life, self-portraits, perspective and use various media including pencil (graphite and colored), charcoal, acrylic paint, and printmaking. Curriculum may vary based on students’ interests.

This course can help prep students for Art Acceleration (AP Art) in the Middle School (Criteria from Port Washington School District.) Instructor will guide and prepare students who will be submitting a portfolio to their school for the AP art program –  including four (4) pieces of art work, only one (1) of which may have been created in Weber (School) art classes. The criteria used for the portfolio evaluation is based on a rubric, which rates students’ work on the following:
1. observational skills
2. control of media
3. composition
4. creativity and imagination
In addition to the portfolio, instructor will prepare students for in an in-school qualifying art examination
