Painting from Life Workshop
with Max Ginsburg
Three Day Workshop: May 4-6, 2018 9 am – 4 pm
Plus: Three-Hour Demo: Thursday May 3, 6-9 pm

In this workshop, students will paint from life, observing the model carefully to see and understand the form and also express the character of the individual posing. The objective of the workshop is to develop skill to paint realistically in the tradition of the Old Masters. Max will critique each student’s painting daily, give painting from life demonstrations, and give talks about contemporary and traditional art in relation to the paintings we are doing in this workshop.

In the first hour, Max will lecture with a slide show about his work and process.

BIO: Since 1953, Max Ginsburg has exhibited extensively in public venues and galleries, won various awards, and his paintings are a part of many museums and private collections. In the years 1980–2004, Max was a prominent illustrator for major publications. Long admired as a teacher, Max taught from 1960–1982 at H.S. Art & Design, 1984-2000 at the School of Visual Arts, 2008–present at the Art Students League and has conducted many workshops around the U.S. and abroad. In 2011 he published his book, Max Ginsburg – Retrospective.

JUROR FRANK PORCU Mr Porcu is an artist and teacher, known for his dynamic larger than life lectures on anatomy for art and medical students He specializes in monumental figurative works and portraiture, in the late classical Hellenistic tradition. Landscape Painting in Oil with Leeanna Chipana
SIX weeks, Tuesdays, Jan. 16, 23, 30, Feb. 6, 13, 27
9:30 am – 12:30 pm

Students will gain a strong understanding of the fundamentals of landscape painting while they advance to more challenging projects. During class we will discuss the genre of landscape and plein air painting. Students will learn about compositional methods and techniques used throughout the centuries such as the concept of perspective, areal perspective, the language of dominant verticals and horizontal lines, how to harmonize color, underpainting methods such as open and closed grisailles. Color theory will be discussed. Students will learn how to organize and structure their landscapes. The goal is for students to have a broader understanding of landscape painting methods as well as increase their skill and accuracy at creating beautiful landscape painting.
Leeanna Chipana began her art studies at the Stevenson Academy of Fine Arts in Oyster Bay, NY in 2004 where she studied under painter and illustrator Attila Hejja. While working as his personal assistant Leeanna studied figure painting with Mr. Hejja. After Mr. Hejja’s sudden death in the Summer of 2007, Leeanna decided to devote her life to pursuing her own art studies more rigorously and dedicate herself to teaching traditional painting and drawing. She started by attending the New York Art Students League where she studied figure painting for two years with artist Nelson Shanks. She went on to continue her studies under full scholarship with Robert Armetta of the Long Island Academy of Fine Art at the Atelier Armetta program located in Glen Cove, NY. She attended the Water Street Atelier where she was enrolled in a full-time program dedicated to classical drawing and painting under artist Jacob Collins. Her work ranges from landscapes to still-life and portraits from life.
Leeanna continued her training at the Grand Central Atelier in New York in their full-time core program – the Water Street Atelier with Jacob Collins. She was a recipient of the John F. and Anna Lee Stacey Grant, a Hudson River Fellow and was awarded a scholarship to attend the New York Academy of Art. She teaches on Long Island’s North Shore.

Landscape Oil Painting with Paul Bachem
FOUR weeks • Tuesday mornings
September 5,12,19 and 26, 2017, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm
Fee: 160m/$190 nm
Hone the fundamental theories of landscape painting. Learn why your subject matter looks the way it does-the importance of being able to judge value (how light or dark an object is), hue (what color is it?) and chroma (how vivid or dull the color is). The assessment and placement of these three elements in your work is key to the realistic rendering of three-dimensional objects in the two-dimensional world of painting. Materials list provided at registration.
BIO: Paul Bachem studied with Harold R. Stevenson and Alma Gallanos Stevenson and enjoyed a thirty-year illustration career. He worked for clients in New York City, across the country and as far away as Sydney, Australia. Paul’s paintings are in numerous private collections as well as the permanent collection of the Forbes Gallery in New York City. He now concentrates on plein air painting and has shown at a number of galleries in the Northeast. He has been included 27 times in the FAV 15% of entries in the Bold Brush monthly painting competition and in October of 2011 was awarded a finalist award by juror Matt Smith. Paul has participated as a competition artist in a number of plein air events including the 2011-2014 Wayne Art Center Plein Air Event in Wayne, PA (honorable mention 2013), Paint The Town 2011 in Cranford, NJ, where he was awarded 3rd prize. Paul has also participated in the prestigious Plein Air Easton in Easton, MD from 2010-2015 (Utrecht Award of Excellence for “Best Use of Light” 2012 and First Place in Quick Draw 2013). Oil Painting for Beginners with Joan Stevens
6 Weeks: Saturdays, October 19, 26, November 2, 9, 16, 23 • 9 – 11 am

This class will start with the very basics of oil painting – drawing techniques, designing your composition, preparing your canvas or surface, and mixing colors. Joan will familiarize students with what supplies to use, different surfaces (pros and cons), the color wheel and color mixing.
Each week, Joan will demo on a subject and students will work on a painting related to the demo. Joan is a fun and relaxed teacher who gives lots of individual help in an environment of creativity and support.

Joan Stevens Bio: Born in Brooklyn, Joan moved to Long Island in her teens. She always had a love of drawing and painting, She works in oils but also sketches in charcoal and pencil. Joan graduated from St. John’s University with a degree in Fine Art and from there went to FIT to earn a degree in illustration. She has studied with Robert Baxter, Charles Pasqualina, Howard Rose, Kim English and Peggi Kroll Roberts. Always returning to her love of figure drawing she can still be found taking life drawing classes in her home town of Long Beach.
She has had many jobs in the world of art including illustration, art director, photo stylist, muralist, window dresser, and face painter. Her company, Through the Looking Glass, designs and installs store windows and decorates for events at restaurants and parties.
Joan has exhibited her work in group and solo shows throughout Long Island. Venues include The National Art League of Douglaston, Art League of Long Island, Elderfield Preserve, Adelphi University, Le Bon Amis Gallery, Martha Clara Vineyard, and iFly Trapeze. She has been commissioned for portraits and landscapes and has donated many pieces to raise money for various charities. She teaches oil painting and drawing at Garden City High school. Joan paints pleine aire whenever possible and is constantly inspired by the beauty of Long Island.
