Acrylic Painting for Beginners with Manuel Adolfo Villalobos

Have you ever wanted to learn how to paint, but didn’t know where to start? In this beginners painting class, students will learn the fundamentals of using acrylic paint. Color theory, color mixing, mediums, and composition development will be used to help create a still life painting.

Additionally, all great paintings began with an idea and sketch, thus, all students need to have a sketchbook at hand to jot down ideas and sketches. After this class you will have a different outlook in painting and the way you see art.

Manuel Adolfo Villalobos is a Fine Artist, Musician and Art Educator from Mineola, New York. He has achieved a Bachelors in Art Education from Long Island University and is also a co-founding member of the alternative hip-hop group A Side Of Darkness (A.S.O.D), where he goes under the stage name OG Manny G and has performed in NYC and Long Island.

He has exhibited his art work in a number of galleries on the Island, such as; Studio 5404, Massapequa, NY, Artspace Gallery, Patchogue, NY, Mills Pond Gallery, St. James, NY, Plaza Art Gallery, Garden City, NY, Sculpture Studio & S.A.L Gallery, Brookville, NY, and The Art Guild, Flower Hill, NY. Through his music and art he expresses socially and politically driven awareness, which is showcased in his artwork and rhythmic lyrics.

CreARTive is a great way for parents to meet instructors and familiarize themselves with The Art Guild. New projects added for 2019! The projects will be geared for ages 5 through 12.

“Our art classes for kids are fun and educational,” said Susan Herbst, Director of Programming. “Our teachers are amazing professionals who come up with creative projects every week all year long. We’d like to reach out to parents, schools and the community to let them know that we offer fun, reasonably priced art classes for students of all ages – from kindergarten through high school, as well as college and beyond.”

GO! The Art of Transportation – March 30-April 28

CALL FOR ENTRIES The Art Guild invites all artists, 18 years and older (high school students ages 14-18 years may enter in the student category), to submit artworks for consideration for “GO! The Art of Transportation,” a Juried Competition and Exhibition. Train, plane, automobile, horseback, covered wagon, ferry, sailboat, bus, or bicycle, how do you get around town or around the world?

CRITERIA All styles from abstract to realism are welcome. All works must be original, and have been created in the last five years. The selection committee’s decision is final. Works to be included in this exhibition must be available from March 25 – April 28, 2019. DEADLINE EXTENDED: WEDNESDAY, March 13.

MEDIUMS Including but not limited to acrylic, oil, watercolor, pastel, mixed media, collage, encaustic, etching/prints, or sculpture with pedestal. (NO COPIES, NO PHOTOGRAPHY, DIGITAL MANIPULATIONS, REPRODUCTIONS OR GICLEES.)

JUROR Antonio Masi is President of the American Watercolor Society and has been featured in The Artist’s Magazine, PBS: Sunday Arts, NBC-TV: Weekend Today in New York,” and Newsday’s “Bridgemaster.” He’s had solo exhibitions at the NY Centennial Commission of the Queensboro Bridge, the Forbes Gallery in NY, the NY City Transit Museum, and the Salmagundi Club, and was featured in The New York Times video, “Living City: A Tale of Two Bridges” in 2014. ENTRY FEE  Registration is required! (Fees below.) Entry fee is non-refundable.

ENTRIES Digital submissions of up to three (3) images via email to artshow@TheArtGuild.org or uploaded to our website, should be  between 1 and 3MB each, and between 2,000 and 4,000 pixels on their longest side. Please label your images as follows: artist’s lastname_firstname_entrynumber_title.jpg (ex: smith_john_1_beachsunset.jpg). Do not use the # or other symbols in the file name. You MUST change the actual name of the image file. Images CANNOT be named “image.jpg” or “fullrender.jpg” or similar – our database overwrites these images. If you email the images, you must include your name, contact information and the title, medium, value, and size in your email.

Works previously exhibited at The Art Guild Gallery will not be considered. Contact us at 516-304-5797 or info@TheArtGuild.org with any questions regarding uploading or emailing your images.

SIZE AND FRAMING Size, with frame, must not exceed 36” on the longest side. Work should be cleanly matted and/or framed (if appropriate), wired securely for hanging, with the wire attached via screw eyes or D-rings to the frame, not the backboard. (Gallery wraps are acceptable.) No saw tooth hangers, no tape or string on the back. Work must be labeled with the title (if any), artist’s name, phone number, and email address.  

FINALISTS The Selection Committee will review all entries and notify each artist as to the acceptance of the submitted work. The Art Guild has the right, in its sole discretion, to choose which eligible entries will be accepted to be exhibited. All decisions are final. Artists whose work has been selected will be notified after March 14.

DELIVERY OF ARTWORK Selected artwork, (ready for display), is to be delivered on the dates indicated below. Please provide a typed bio or artist statement, printed on one side of an 8.5 x 11 sheet of white paper.

AWARDS 1st Place $300 • 2nd Place $200 • 3rd Place $100 • Honorable Mention certificates and Student Award/s (if applicable) will also be awarded.

SALES Artwork may be sold directly by the artist with a suggested donation of 20% of the selling price from the artist to The Art Guild. Note, however, that sales may not be made at the exhibition. All work must remain on view for the duration of the exhibit.

LIABILITY & INSURANCE The Liability Waiver on the entry form must be signed by the artist submitting images for consideration. It is the responsibility of the participating artist to insure or self-insure any work submitted for inclusion in this exhibit.

Intrigued by the idea of painting abstractly? This four session class will give you a taste of painting in an abstract manner . We will be working with black and white water based enamel on watercolor paper. This experience has been called “freeing” and “a lot of fun “ by so many students. Experience what it feels like to paint this way . Lots of individualized instruction and discussion . The works you produce here can be the beginnings of new ideas and directions.
About Ellen Hallie Schiff

Artist’s Statement
An essential truth seems to come alive when I use my body to create my paintings- something visceral and muscular; a directness that feels so “right”. The authentic mark is what I am after; the true, non-gimmicky, not contrived mark; the mark that is made when “I am the painting I am painting”. Playing with the paint, working sometimes at the speed of light, other times slowly and deliberately; all coming together in a flurry of physical activity. The result is an authentic moment in time.

Ellen is Vice President of The Art Guild of Port Washington and on the Art Advisory Council of the Port Washington Library. Her work has been exhibited in galleries in Philadelphia and New York. Her friend and mentor is Stan Brodsky.

Through painting sessions, demos, and critiques, Duane Keiser will lead a challenging two-day workshop on premier coup painting. Premier coup, or “first strike,” is a painting done with the intent of finishing it in one sitting. Like Jazz, premier coup can be wonderfully improvisational while also requiring a high degree of precision and control. Duane will share his various strategies, techniques, and ways of thinking about painterly exploration of a subject within the confines of a moment.
Duane Keiser studied painting under Raymond Berry at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia and Lennart Anderson at Brooklyn College in NYC. His “A Painting a Day” blog has been written about in numerous publications, including USA Today, The New York Times and The Huffington Post. Using a makeshift easel made from a cigar box, he makes a postcard-sized painting each day and posts them to his blog where collectors can bid on them via eBay. The project is ongoing and can be seen at duanekeiser.com. He is also known for his “painted animations.” A modern take on the still life, these videos combine traditional painting, animation, and time-lapse. He has exhibited at Fischbach Gallery, Allan Stone Gallery and, most recently, the New York Academy of Art. His work resides in several corporate collections and hundreds of private collections worldwide, including the Gregory Peterson Collection.
