Discover the difference between drawing and painting with colored pencils in this three-day colored pencil workshop.  Cynthia Knox will guide you step by step through the process of creating this stunning still life (photo reference shown) and will demonstrate her signature style of painting with this dry medium.  A variety of tips and techniques will be taught that will enable each artist to render the lace, fruit, flower, wood and metallic textures seen in this composition.  In addition to group and individual instruction, Cynthia will provide high-quality instructional materials that include a glossy tutorial booklet, reference photo, her popular “Cheat Sheet” and the actual surface with a light tracing of the entire still life to minimize actual drawing time and focus on color rendering.  Join Cynthia in creating a unique masterpiece that friends and family will be certain to ask, “THAT’s colored pencil?!”

Cynthia Knox, CPSA, is a colored pencil and graphite artist who lives in New York with her family.  Her artwork has received numerous awards in national and international juried exhibitions, and she has published 13 art instructional books, with a new book to be released in the Fall of 2018.  Publishers include Walter Foster Publishing (Quartos), Ann Kullberg Publishing, Strathmore Artists, and Viking Woodcrafts.  Cynthia teaches art workshops to individuals and large groups throughout the United States, internationally and online with Craftsy.com.  She is represented by LaBelle Enterprises for her workshops with Bob LaBelle as the primary contact: boblabelle@sbcglobal.net.

Although painting a person in watercolor may seem daunting, it is every bit as approachable as creating a still life or landscape. Ted Nuttall demonstrates the techniques, and instills the confidence to enjoy painting people. Ted will discuss the benefits of photographic reference, as well as how to interpret a photo in order to give life and energy to the subject.

In Ted’s daily demonstrations and presentations, he shares his personal approach to painting – plus he introduces the work of other artists with the objective of inspiring enriched seeing and thinking skills. What’s more, significant time is allowed for one-on-one instruction. In an atmosphere that’s both creative and supportive, Ted encourages, in each participant, a renewed enthusiasm for his or her art – regardless of their skill level.

Ted Nuttall: A graduate of Colorado Institute of Art, Ted Nuttall is a figurative artist whose painting expression was born out of his observation of people. Ted is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Watercolor West, Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, and enjoys Master Status with the Transparent Watercolor Society of America
Ted’s paintings continue to win awards in juried exhibitions throughout the country. And his work has been featured in numerous national and international art publications. Most recently, he was a featured artist in both the 2014 Russian publication “Masters of Watercolor” and in the 2013 French publication “Pratique Des Arts”. Ted was the featured cover artist for the February 2014 issue of Watercolor Artist magazine. Ted’s work has been published in North Light Books’, Splash 8 and Splash 10, and his painting “Whispering Smith” appeared on the cover of Splash 12.
Artist’s Statement: For as long as I can remember, I have been a fascinated spectator of human behavior – the quintessential people watcher. I naturally seek the unique character in everyone I encounter. Often, as I observe someone in his or her everyday environment, I am rewarded with a moment when a gesture or expression combine with the play of light and shadow.
A contemplative smile, hands cradling a book or carefully tying a shoe, a shadow cast by a pair of wire-rimmed glasses – and there occurs a pivotal instant when a story appears.
My paintings are an attempt to compose and thoughtfully record the nuances that transfixed these moments, these stories, in my mind.

Matisse expresses the notion superbly: “I do not literally paint that table, but the emotion it produces upon me.”

In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of clay and surface decoration by creating functional or sculptural objects and  prepping them for the kiln. You will be introduced to the incredible medium of clay by learning about its properties, how to shape and form it, join it and manipulate the surface. Through exploring texture and shape you will make your own art in clay.

Master Potter, Patricia Bridges is a full time professional studio potter, dedicated to excellence in craftsmanship. She has been designing and crafting practical, high-quality ceramics for over three decades. Her work ranges from wheel thrown functional ceramics for the kitchen, table and home to more decorative work off of the potter’s wheel. Through painting sessions, demos, and critiques, Duane Keiser will lead a challenging two-day workshop on premier coup painting. Premier coup, or “first strike,” is a painting done with the intent of finishing it in one sitting. Like Jazz, premier coup can be wonderfully improvisational while also requiring a high degree of precision and control. Duane will share his various strategies, techniques, and ways of thinking about painterly exploration of a subject within the confines of a moment.
Duane Keiser studied painting under Raymond Berry at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia and Lennart Anderson at Brooklyn College in NYC. His “A Painting a Day” blog has been written about in numerous publications, including USA Today, The New York Times and The Huffington Post. Using a makeshift easel made from a cigar box, he makes a postcard-sized painting each day and posts them to his blog where collectors can bid on them via eBay. The project is ongoing and can be seen at duanekeiser.com. He is also known for his “painted animations.” A modern take on the still life, these videos combine traditional painting, animation, and time-lapse. He has exhibited at Fischbach Gallery, Allan Stone Gallery and, most recently, the New York Academy of Art. His work resides in several corporate collections and hundreds of private collections worldwide, including the Gregory Peterson Collection. Patti Mollica believes that truly great painting is not about the “subject matter,” but rather the way an artist communicates beauty, sensitivity and integrity in whatever is painted. Flowers, gardens and sunsets are no more worthy as painting subjects than a subway station full of weary commuters, or a closeup of an old rundown building with cascading fire escapes. She believes that a painter’s job is to show the viewer the inherant beauty of all subjects and scenes, most especially the ones that are not commonly thought of in an artistic light.

Although she is equally comfortable working in both oils and acrylics, she feels that the new developments in recent years to acrylics make them a perfect vehicle for infinite versatility and personal expression. This is explored and illustrated in depth in her book, “Modern Acrylics“.
