Painting Foliage and Trees with Howard Rose

When Painting Plein air or in the studio, we all are striving to create elegant and creative landscapes. When we were in elementary school, our teacher taught us how to draw a tree. We of course made a big green ball with a brown straight trunk coming out of it. It’s taken 40 years to get over that ingrained image. We will have 4 sessions going over all foliage: drawing calligraphic grasses and trees and limbs. Turning your brush to create elegant lines with the least amount of effort. How do you draw big bunches of flowers? Our initial start is to draw each flower and ignore how our eyes really see bunches of flowers…shapes, variety and transition of light to lead the eye in the right direction.

Getting good at painting a scene that you would walk by a thousand times, and never pay attention to, could be the most exciting part in this journey to become a great painter.

We are the artists…We don’t accept the given image because we want to make sure our design is as good as can be. We can change the shapes, move things around, push the light for drama and add atmosphere when you might not see it in your chosen image.

At iur first session we will review other artists that have expertise in our type of trees and foliage techniques. We will go over their work and hopefully will inspire you to learn from them and add different techniques to your own paintings. Howard will then do a short demo at the start of each class based on the subject that we are working on for that class.

Over the next 3 sessions we will cover everything that has been part of your landscape painting journey: Colors of the landscape, brush technique, texture, atmosphere, moving objects around to create great design, seeing the shapes of beautiful objects, edges, arial perspective and picking a pleasing subject.

There is lots of learning to do and with practice, you will start to SEE the possibilities and how every 5 degree turn is a beautiful painting…waiting to be painted.

About Howard Rose

Howard Rose graduated from the School of Visual Arts, NYC, and Graduate studies at C.W. Post, and the New School in NYC. Since 1974, he was head product

Since 1974, he was head product designer for a major leatherwear company in Santa Monica. In 1980 he started his own graphics and product design company on Long Island. In 1989, Howard saw the paintings of a western painter named John Nieto. The amazing colors and large sized paintings of American Indians caught his eye and he hasn’t looked back since. Howard has studied with Artists, Alfred Chadbourn. Charles Sovek, Matt-Smith, and Ovanes Berberian. He had is ﬁrst art studio in Roslyn, NY for 18 years where he taught and specialized in landscapes.The beaches of Long Island became his favorite subjects including the dunes, waves, and sky’s found in some of the most beautiful beaches in the country.He teaches oil painting classes in multiple venues on Long Island,including the Art Guild, League of Long Island, National Art League and runs classes at his studio in Syosset, Long Island. Howard runs many varied workshops including; Color Mixing, Iphone,photography, Design and perspective and an intensive Calligraphy and Penmanship course.His articles and instruction techniques have been published in various magazines, including “Artists”, and “American Artist” Magazine. He runs annual workshops in Tuscany, Paris, Venice,Barcelona, and many locations on the east coast. He runs plein air workshops all over the east coast.

With over twenty years’ experience teaching, Instructor Denis Ponsot has designed this informative class to demonstrate all the “shop tricks” in watercolor painting. Both beginning and experienced students will learn to avoid common pitfalls and advance their abilities. The focus will be on students individually, helping them realize their full watercolor potential. Explore a variety of watercolor techniques with an emphasis on developing one’s own style. Includes demonstrations of color and design, wet on wet, and dry-brush techniques. Students choose to paint from still life arrangements, photos, or their own subjects.

About Denis

Award-winning artist, Denis Ponsot has worked in all of the various media but prefers to work in watercolor. He also teaches watercolor painting, oils, mixed media, and drawing from introductory to advanced levels to children and adults.

He says, “Teaching is my greatest inspiration. The combination of teaching and painting has helped to make my artistic experience complete. Working with students is important to me because I enjoy helping them with their painting and drawing problems. I am able to encourage them to experiment with their own ideas. I take pleasure in helping my students expand their artistic horizons beyond their expectations.” Denis teaches at The Craft Students League and The Kids Club in Manhattan and at the Art Guild in addition to accepting commissions in watercolor, oil, and portrait painting.

Arches paper 140lb cold press

Either 2 sheets of 22×30 cut into 4 sheets, or a 12×16 block

Set of beginner watercolors or watercolors of your choice

Denis recommends Cottman for beginners

Brushes – #5, #7, #10 and a flat 1/4″ and 1″
Miskit or another brand of masking
Rubber cement pick up (this is used to take off the Miskit)
Pencil (#2H preferred)
Eraser (Denis recommends Staedler)

Watercolor for Beginners with Esther Marie
4 Tuesdays: Jan. 28, Feb. 4, 11, 25, 2020 • 1-3pm

This class will help promote confidence and control in watercolors for the beginner. We will focus on developing good compositions through negative painting, focal points and a variety of tools. Students will learn about brush strokes, washes, mixes, blending and color theory. They will use watercolors to establish color and light, to work wet-on-wet, for texture, to suggest value changes, for negative painting with discussion on composition, as well as for focus and depth.

Emphasis in this class is for individual instructional techniques to foster your ability. Students will complete several small paintings in the class. A demonstration will be followed by hands on experience and personal critiques.

A native of Long Island, Esther Marie actively exhibits in many art related gallery shows, auctions and events both nationally and internationally. She works for clients in New York City and across the country. She had also showed her work globally, as far away as South Korea. She was awarded a fellowship and hand selected for a renowned art residency at The Chautauqua Institution in upstate New York, as well as a full scholarship to the Vermont Studio Center. She also participated in a Rotary International Exchange for a month where she learned about the culture. Besides being immersed into the culture they were introduced to artists, viewed their art, and she created several different art pieces using Korean traditional art techniques. Esther Marie’s paintings are in several private as well as permanent collections. She concentrates on Plein Aire and abstract painting and has shown at numerous galleries in the Northeast of the United States. Esther Marie was named “Best in Show” at the Northport Plein Aire event. In perhaps her best achievement yet, she was chosen to be in the exclusive Heckscher Museum of Art Long Island Biennial. Aside from painting, Esther Marie enjoys teaching art, yoga, meditation, dancing, poetry and chess. She lives and works as an art instructor and adjunct professor in Long Island, New York.
