Enjoy dedicated time to work on your colored pencil art! Discover the fun of working in a relaxed, supportive class environment dedicated to Colored Pencil as a fine art.

For intermediate and advanced students who want to work on their own projects. Instructor and peers will support each other in taking skills to the next level. Experimentation encouraged.

Multimedia projects are welcome, as long as the project contains at least 50% colored pencil. If using pastels, please limit to panpastels.

Occasional demonstrations and explorations of other media compatible with colored pencil will be offered. Additional materials fees may apply.

Artists will be responsible for their own materials.

Colored Pencil: Beyond the Basics with Katrina Benson

Join Katrina as she helps you explore beyond the basics, including experimenting with different surfaces, and mixing colored pencils with other media.

This class will offer selected projects, along with short explorations of different surfaces and techniques. Students are encouraged to choose the class projects; however they may also bring their own.
Periodic additional materials fees will apply depending on projects select. All students wil need to bring basic supplies, and a list of suggested items will be provided prior to the first class.

Some experience necessary.

BEGINNER WATERCOLOR

Ages 18-Adult, open to 8 students.
4 Week Session: Wednesdays: May 9, 16, 23, 30, 2018 • noon – 2 pm

Watercolor is a truly diverse medium. Explore basic techniques of washes, learn wet on wet painting, glazing and dry brush methods. We will begin to understand the properties of pigments and when to use them properly. Watercolor is always challenging, fresh and new. No experience necessary, beginners welcome.

INTERMEDIATE WATERCOLOR

Ages 18-Adult, open to 8 students.
4 Week Session: Wednesdays: May 9, 16, 23, 30, 2018 • 9:30 am – 11:30pm

Continue using watercolor techniques of washes, wet on wet painting and dry brush methods. We will move beyond the basics, creating a series of more complex paintings and completing interpretations of projects presented in class. Watercolor is always challenging, fresh and new. Portrait Drawing & Painting with Leeanna Chipana

This course is for beginners through advanced students. Working from the long pose students will be introduced to concepts of structural anatomy of the face and head. Students will review comparative measuring, sight size methods, light and form, and various shading techniques used by artists throughout the 18th and 19th century. The goal of this course is for each student to walk a way with a strong understanding of drawing and painting the portrait not only skillfully and accurately but also with a broader understanding of historical concepts of portraiture. Demonstrations will be provided throughout the course and lectures on portrait drawing and painting methods used throughout the centuries by master artists.

Includes model fee.

Leeanna Chipana began her art studies at the Stevenson Academy of Fine Arts in Oyster Bay, NY in 2004 where she studied under painter and illustrator Attila Hejja. While working as his personal assistant Leeanna studied figure painting with Mr. Hejja. After Mr. Hejja’s sudden death in the Summer of 2007, Leeanna decided to devote her life to pursuing her own art studies more rigorously and dedicate herself to teaching traditional painting and drawing. She started by attending the New York Art Students League where she studied figure painting for two years with artist Nelson Shanks. She went on to continue her studies under full scholarship with Robert Armetta of the Long Island Academy of Fine Art at the Atelier Armetta program located in Glen Cove, NY. She attended the Water Street Atelier where she was enrolled in a full-time program dedicated to classical drawing and painting under artist Jacob Collins. Her work ranges from landscapes to still-life and portraits from life.

Leeanna continued her training at the Grand Central Atelier in New York in their full-time core program – the Water Street Atelier with Jacob Collins. She was a recipient of the John F. and Anna Lee Stacey Grant, a Hudson River Fellow and was awarded a scholarship to attend the New York Academy of Art. She teaches on Long Island’s North Shore.

FOUR weeks • Tuesday mornings
September 5,12,19 and 26, 2017, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm
Fee: 160m/$190 nm

Hone the fundamental theories of landscape painting. Learn why your subject matter looks the way it does-the importance of being able to judge value (how light or dark an object is), hue (what color is it?) and chroma (how vivid or dull the color is). The assessment and placement of these three elements in your work is key to the realistic rendering of three-dimensional objects in the two-dimensional world of painting. Materials list provided at registration.

BIO: Paul Bachem studied with Harold R. Stevenson and Alma Gallanos Stevenson and enjoyed a thirty-year illustration career. He worked for clients in New York City, across the country and as far away as Sydney, Australia. Paul’s paintings are in numerous private collections as well as the permanent collection of the Forbes Gallery in New York City. He now concentrates on plein air painting and has shown at a number of galleries in the Northeast. He has been included 27 times in the FAV 15% of entries in the Bold Brush monthly painting competition and in October of 2011 was awarded a finalist award by juror Matt Smith. Paul has participated as a competition artist in a number of plein air events including the 2011-2014 Wayne Art Center Plein Air Event in Wayne, PA (honorable mention 2013), Paint The Town 2011 in Cranford, NJ, where he was awarded 3rd prize. Paul has also participated in the prestigious Plein Air Easton in Easton, MD from 2010-2015 (Utrecht Award of Excellence for “Best Use of Light” 2012 and First Place in Quick Draw 2013). Paul was recently juried in as a member of The Salmagundi Club in NYC. He also loves to cook and plays classical guitar…albeit poorly! Visit his website at www.paulbachem.com.
