Wallflowers: An Exhibit & Competition
September 1-30

The Art Guild invites all artists, 18 years and older (high school students ages 14-18 years may enter in the student category), to submit digital images of their 2D or 3D art works for consideration for its Wallflowers: An Exhibition and Competition. 

Wallflowers focuses on the beauty of flowers – from big lush peonies and perfect roses to the smallest snowdrops and dandelions, few things evoke more memories or encompass more symbolism. We long for the first flowers of spring in our gardens and they commemorate special occasions and holidays throughout the year. Show us the flowers that you love – rolling meadows, formal gardens, a single bud in a vase or enough to fill a room.

All work must be original. The selection committee’s decision is final.  Works to be included in this exhibition must be available from August 27 – September 30.

MEDIUM
Any medium, including but not limited to acrylic, oil, watercolor, pastel, drawings, mixed media, photography, collage or sculpture with pedestal.  (NO COPIES, REPRODUCTIONS OR GICLEES PLEASE)

JUROR OF AWARDS
Sharon Pearsall studied art history and painting at C.W Post in Greenvale, N.Y. She has studied at the Art Students League of New York since 1999 under several master painters, including Gregg Kreutz, Frank Mason, Nelson Shanks, Max Ginsburg and Harvey Dinnerstein. She has also studied privately with Frank Arcuri and Gregg Kreutz. Sharon continues to paint with Max Ginsburg on weekends. While studying at the Art Students League of New York, Sharon also took classes at the National Academy of Art and Grand Central Academy. Her work has been shown in many shows and exhibits, including: Catherine Lorillard Wolfe at The National Arts Club, Salmagundi Art Club, The Audobon Artists Inc., The Pastel Society of America, Gallery North, Jeanie Tengelson Gallery and many more.

SIZE AND FRAMING Size, with frame, must not exceed 36” on the longest side. Work should be cleanly matted and/or framed (if appropriate), wired securely for hanging, with the wire attached via screw eyes or D-rings to the frame, not the backboard. (Gallery wraps are acceptable.) No saw tooth hangers, no tape or string on the back. Work must be labeled with the title (if any), artist’s name, phone number, and email address.  

FINALISTS The Selection Committee will review all entries and notify each artist as to the acceptance of the submitted work. The Art Guild has the right, in its sole discretion, to choose which eligible entries will be accepted to be exhibited. All decisions are final. Artists whose work has been selected will be notified after August 15.

Delivery of ARTWORK Selected artwork, (ready for display), is to be delivered on the dates indicated below. Please provide a typed bio or artist statement, printed on one side of an 8.5 x 11 sheet of white paper.

AWARDS 1st Place $300 • 2nd Place $200 • 3rd Place $100 • Honorable Mention certificates and Student Award/s (if applicable) will also be awarded.

SALES Artwork may be sold directly by the artist with a suggested donation of 20% of the selling price from the artist to The Art Guild. Note, however, that sales may not be made at the exhibition. All work must remain on view for the duration of the exhibit.

LIABILITY & INSURANCE The Liability Waiver on the entry form must be signed by the artist submitting images for consideration. It is the responsibility of the participating artist to insure or self-insure any work submitted for inclusion in this exhibit.

Two-Day Workshop: POSTPONED

A TWO-DAY WORKSHOP ON THE PAINTING OF FLORAL/STILL LIFE USING THE VIVID COLOR AND FLEXIBILITY OF THE PASTEL.  

An introductory demonstration will explore the use of underpaintings and how they contribute to more expressive paintings Emphasis will be on simplifying forms, depth of space, line quality, composition and color value.  During the workshop students will explore using color and design in a new and different way.  Explore the secrets of the still life by seeing not only the forms, values, and edges but also the movement and atmosphere surrounding the still life pieces.

This workshop provides an understanding of the concepts and techniques of pastel painting.  Artists of all levels of painting abilities are welcome.

Day One:  Beginning the Painting

A demonstration will illustrate and discuss firstly, design choices in the selection and placement of the still life objects. Afterward, color choices will be explored in preparation of the painting by the use of underpainting techniques.

Students will have the opportunity to apply these principles by completing a study of a still life using reference material that will be supplied to them before working from life.

Day Two: Direct Observation

A morning demo will illustrate the implementation of pastel painting principles to capture the beauty of the still life. Using effective pastel strokes and blending or not blending to create and maintain fresh paint quality will also be discussed. Students will work from live setups to create their own individual interpretation and depiction of the floral still life.

Jane McGraw began drawing as a youth in Scotland.  She received her masters degree and teaching degrees in New York and studied at the Art Students League of New York with such renowned artists as Richard Pionk, Frank Mason and Harvey Dinnerstein.

A former university instructor and administrator and founder of both the Art Circle and the Muttontown School of Fine Arts at the Chelsea Center, Ms McGraw’s current artistic attentions are solely directed to painting and teaching.

Ms McGraw’s recent commissions include portraits of children in Virginia, Maryland and New York. Recent exhibitions of both pastel and oil paintings have been viewed at the Salmagundi Club and National Arts Club in New York City as well as Long Island venues including the Barnes Gallery, the Huntington Art Center and the Long Island University at C.W. Post in Long Island.  Recent acquisitions include Bank of America and the United States Department of Commerce.

She is a life member of the Art Students League of New York and a juried member of many organizations including the Oil Painters of America, The American Society of Marine Painters, the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, the Hudson Valley Art Association and the Audubon Artists.

The Art Guild invites the public to view the 2018 Members Showcase Exhibit and enjoy the beautiful grounds of Elderfields Historic Preserve at a Garden Party Reception and Awards Ceremony on Friday June 8, 6-8 pm. Awards of merit and the annual Terri Shkuda Award for Broadening Creative Pursuits will be presented and there will be an acoustic music performance by Chris Kinnear. The Art Guild will also be introducing their new Executive Director, Lisa Grossman and awarding a scholarship to Erin Hogarty of Wantagh High School. The show will be on view from Saturday, May 26 through Sunday, June 24, 2018. The gallery is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1 – 5 pm (or by appointment) and is always free.

JUROR OF AWARDS: Marc Josloff is an award winning painter, photographer and art educator. He recieved his BS in advertising design and visual communication at Pratt Institute and returned there for an MS in art therapy and art education. Marc was mentored by watercolorists Mel Stabin, Irwin Greenberg and Paul Ching Bor. His painting “Boy on a Scooter” appeared in Northlight publication’s Splash 19: Illusions in Light. He was honored by the LI Arts Council with the “Arts in Education Award” and also named him as one of the “Top 25 Arts Advocates.” He is on the board of the Hudson River Art Association and is currently represented by the Roslyn Village Gallery. www.josloffgalleries.com

Lisa Grossman, The Art Guild’s new Executive Director has lived in Port Washington for 12 years with her husband and two daughters and has been active in many organizations in the community. Most recently she was Director of Development at Residents Forward. She is treasurer of Community Synagogue and is on the Advisory Board of The Ed Foundation.

The annual Terri Shkuda Award for Broadening Creative Pursuits will be presented to Ivan Frisch. Ivan was a long time member of the board and active on the Auditing and Finance Committees. Ivan was always our “voice of reason” and his steady thinking is missed. 

The Art Guild’s annual scholarship being presented to Wantagh High School senior Erin Hogarty is one of three awarded in 2018. Erin is an accomplished artist who is adept in many mediums. Her artwork was awarded third place at The Art Guild’s 2017 Nassau County High School Exhibition, has been in the 2016 and 2017 Long Island’s Best Young Artists at The Heckscher Museum of Art, and has won awards in the 2017 and 2018 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. She will be attending the Columbus College of Art and Design for a degree in Illustration (BFA) with a minor in Animation. Two other scholarships were awarded to seniors Rico Ford of Valley Stream Central High School (who will study Illustration and Set Design) and Nicolette Constantinides of Hicksville High School (who will be attending Farmingdale State College and hopes to pursue a BFA in Illustration with a minor in Psychology).

Going Green: Celebrate the Earth!

The Art Guild invites all artists, 18 years and older (high school students ages 14-18 years may enter in the student category), to submit digital images of their 2D or 3D art works for consideration for its Going Green: Celebrate the Earth Exhibition and Competition. 

Join us in honoring our late member, Myra Fox as we celebrate Earth Day. A committed environmentalist and chair of the original “Going Green” exhibit, Myra was happiest when her hands were dirty –  either with paint or from her gardening work. We invite artists to repurpose, recycle or create new artwork to celebrate the beauty of the world around us and honor the spirit of Myra, who was so committed to healing our earth. 

All work must be original. Celebrate the beauty of our planet. Raise public awareness.  Show us your green ideas by using traditional media and/or old things in new ways. Recycle, Reuse and Renew. The selection committee’s decision is final.  Works to be included in this exhibition must be available from March 25 – April 29.

JUROR
Martha Tarlow, Owner of the Roslyn Village Gallery.  Marsha Tarlow was born in Manhattan and grew up on the lower East Side where her parents encouraged an appreciation of the arts and nurtured her love of painting. Marsha opened the Roslyn Village Gallery in 2016 and featured a large exhibit of Myra Fox’s work in 2017.
Of her own art Marsha says, “I believe my paintings speak on a level that makes one feel good. My art is peaceful, inspiring in me a feeling of serenity. If the content is sincere, it will be noticed. To me, painting is like breathing and I often remind myself how lucky I am to be a painter. I don’t believe artistic skill is a natural endowment…you are born with a gift, but the determining factor for an artist is motivation and hard work. It takes intelligence, sensitivity, good teaching and luck to develop artistically.” Her work is in many private collections.

Making Landscape Colors Sing: In Pastels
with Lana Ballot
Two Day Workshop: Nov 11-12, 2017, 10am – 4:30 pm

During this workshop we’ll explore how to avoid muddy tired colors in a pastel painting and make confident color choices whether you want to capture a bright sunny day or subtle atmospheric effects. The introduction demo will illustrate the specifics of color layering and underpainting techniques to create beautifully nuanced color, depth and texture.
In a series of exercises we’ll explore how using different color characteristics we can improve the overall design, create more dynamic composition, make a stronger visual statement.
For a final work, students will have a choice of working from their own reference or using one of the provided photos.
All levels of experience are welcome.

Bio: Lana Ballot, PSA,  is a professional artist and pastel painting instructor, living on Long Island, NY. Working primarily in pastels, she prefers this medium for its immediacy, spontaneity and unparalleled luminosity of color. Through years of experience painting outdoors Lana’s work is characterized by confident and expressive use of color and painterly mark-making.  Lana is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America. Her work has been exhibited in National juried shows. 
• 2015, her work received an Honorable mention in the Pastel Journal’s Pastel 100 competition. 
• 2016, she was awarded The Yang Family Award in the Pastel Society of America’s annual show Enduring Brilliance. 
• 2017, she won 1st place awards in local and national pastel shows, and The Best of Show in For Pastels, Only On Cape Cod juried pastel exhibition.
